Child Assessments

Children are referred when difficulties are noticed in the following areas :

  • emotional (eg. tearfullness, sleeping or eating difficulty, excessive fears or worries )
  • behavioral (eg. aggression, bed wetting or soiling, withdrawn behavior, lying, stealing )
  • learning and/or concentration (eg. struggling to focus at school, not reaching their potential or problems with work at school )
  • social (eg. fighting or bullying, making or sustaining friendships )

The Way The Assessment Works

  1. The initial interview is with the parents, which allows me to get a detailed history in order to understand the difficulty and to structure the assessment in the most effective way for the child.
  2. The assessment includes an emotional assessment of the child which allows me to better understand the way he or she views their world and to identify whether there is anything from an emotional point of view which may be impacting on them presently.
  3. If necessary, the intellectual assessment will help me to identify whether there is any learning difficulty which is impacting on the childs' ability to perform to their potential at school.
  4. Gathering collateral (with parental permission), includes getting information from teachers and any other professionals (eg. occupational therapist, speech therapists, remedial therapists, psychiatrists or other psychologists, paediatricians), who have worked with the child previously.
  5. A feedback session with the parents allows for the discussion of the assessment results as well as an effective treatment plan to address any identified areas of difficulty. Referrals to other professionals (paediatricians, occupational therapists etc. ) are made when appropriate and necessary.
  6. Followup feedbacks with the parents, gives the opportunity to assess the childs' progress and treatment plan. 

Other Assessments Include :

  •  School readiness is an assessment of the emotional, intellectual and social functioning of the child. This is to determine whether there are any areas of concern which may impede on the child reaching their full potential in Grade one.

Areas not covered in this practice include any legal/forensic work (eg. custody assessments ).  I am more than happy to make referrals to professionals who specialise in these areas.
